Generation 1: Kanto

151 Pokémon introduced in Pokémon Red, Green, Blue and Yellow (1996).

The original 151. Pokémon Red and Green launched in Japan in 1996 on the Game Boy, followed by Blue and then Yellow, which added Pikachu as a starter that follows the player around. Red and Blue reached North America in 1998 and set the template every later game follows: eight gyms, an Elite Four, a rival, and a regional Pokédex to complete.

Kanto introduced the fifteen original types and the Legendary birds Articuno, Zapdos and Moltres, along with Mewtwo and the Mythical Mew. It remains the most familiar generation for most players, and its starters, Bulbasaur, Charmander and Squirtle, are still the most recognisable trio in the series.
